Middle School Admissions – NYC PS
Overview
New York City’s Middle School Admissions process is designed to help families find schools that best match their child’s academic needs and interests. Students who are currently in 5th grade (and NYC residents) are eligible to apply to NYC public middle schools for entry in 6th grade.
Families can apply to up to 12 middle school programs using the NYC DOE’s MySchools system. Offers are made based on each school’s admissions method and priorities.
How to Apply
1. Explore Schools
Families are encouraged to explore middle school options using MySchools, where they can:
- Search for schools by location, program, or interest area
- Review admissions methods and priorities
- Learn about academics, extracurriculars, and school culture
2. Submit an Application
Students submit one middle school application listing up to 12 programs, ranked in true order of preference. Applications are submitted online through MySchools or with support from the student’s current school.
Admissions Methods
Middle school programs use different admissions methods, including:
- Open: All applicants are considered equally, based on admissions priorities.
- Screened: Offers may be based on academic records, assessments, or other criteria.
- Screened with Assessment: Includes an additional assessment or task.
- Audition: Used for arts-based programs.
- Language Programs: May prioritize students who speak or are learning a specific language.
Admissions priorities may include borough, district, or attendance zone.
Important Timeline
- Middle school admissions typically open in the fall of a student’s 5th-grade year.
- Applications close in the winter.
- Offers are released in the spring.

Offers & Next Steps
Each student receives one middle school offer. Families can:

- Accept the offer
