Social Emotional Learning Program

RULER Social Emotional Learning Program M.S. 101 students and staff actively participate in RULER, developed by the Yale Center for Social and Emotional Intelligence. RULER applies “hard science” to the teaching of what have historically been called “soft skills.” RULER teaches the skills of emotional intelligence — those associated with recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating emotion.

Our Guidance Team and our RULER Ambassadors meet weekly to design activities to do in the classroom with their peers as well as whole school activities. Throughout the fall, our Ambassadors visit classrooms to talk to students about the Mood Meter and how to identify our emotions. The RULER Ambassadors help our Guidance team choose 6th graders to become our future Ambassadors. They have facilitated many unique opportunities throughout the school, including the creation of a “Shout Out Board” for teachers and a “Choose Kind” Board in the cafeteria. The team continues to work together to spread kindness and teach others about social emotional learning.

Woodlawn Leadership and Legacy Program

M.S. 101 is part of the Woodlawn Leadership and Legacy Program. Students who are selected for this program participate in three workshops with the educational leaders from Woodlawn Cemetery, hockey greats, Stephan Matteau, Ron Duguay and Colton Oor. The Woodlawn Student Leadership & Legacy Program aims to use the past to build future leaders through mentorship, community service, and a curriculum inspired by its notable figures.
