Cell Phone Policy
Students are permitted to bring the following electronic items to school:
- Cell phones, Laptops, tablets, Kindles, iPads and other similar computing devices. and
- Portable music and entertainment systems, such as iPods, MP3 players, PSP, and Nintendo DS.
The school is not liable for lost, stolen and/or damaged cell phones, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems.
- Cell phones and electronic items may not be turned on or used during the school day or during self-sustaining after-school programs or school trips. This ban includes the use of cell phones for photography or videoing purposes.
- Cell phones and electronic items must remain turned off and stored in student backpacks during the school day and during self-sustaining after-school programs or school trips.
- Students who use cell phones and/or electronic items, in violation of any provision of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor’s regulation A-413, and/or the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (“IAUSP”) will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.
Confiscation and return of cell phones and electronic items: Students who use their cell phones, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems during the school day or during self-sustaining after-school programs or school trips will face the following disciplinary consequences:
- First Infraction – Confiscation of cell phone and/or electronic items by teachers. Cell phone and/or electronic items will be sent to the principal’s office. Parent/guardian will be notified by the Principal or Assistant Principal. The cell phone and/or electronic items will be returned to the student at the end of the school day.
- Second Infraction – Confiscation of cell phone and/or electronic items by teachers. Cell phone and/or electronic items will be sent to the principal’s office. Parent/guardian will be notified by the Principal or Assistant Principal. The cell phone and/or electronic items will be returned to a parent/guardian at the end of the school day (in consultation with parent/guardian).
- Third Infraction – Confiscation of cell phone and/or electronic items by teachers. Cell phone and/or electronic items will be sent to the principal’s office. Parent/guardian will be notified by the Principal or Assistant Principal. The cell phone and/or electronic items will be returned to the parent/guardian at the end of the school day (in consultation with the parent/guardian). There will be a revocation of cell phone and/or electronic items privilege for the student for a period of one month (in consultation with the parent/guardian). Student will receive in-school disciplinary consequence according to the New York City Discipline Code. Consequences may include a removal from class by the teacher or a Principal’s Suspension.
